Shade was spun off by Dr. Emmanuel Dumont in 2016 after his postdoctoral studies on wearable UV measurements, under the supervision of MacArthur fellow Professor Deborah Estrin at Cornell Tech in New York City.
UV exposure has a wide range of health consequences, from the occasional sunburn to severe autoimmune reactions or skin cancer. Our mission is to provide real-time and accurate measurements of UV exposure with a scientific approach, centered on clinical evidence and peer-reviewed publications. Eventually, we think real-time measurement of UV will be part of every smartwatch, just like physical activity or heart rate.
Shade has raised over $5M in funding, from early-stage venture funds, the National Institute of Healths, and the National Science Foundation.
